Our pre-cut blanks are no longer available, but almost any piece of wood will work. We suggest starting with a soft wood such as balsa or basswood, and either cutting or carving it into an extruded + shape; see the example below. This is a good way to visualize where the links will be.
Carve notches where the links will be, remove the extra wood at the ends, then draw the inside lines of each link. As you whittle away the inside bits between the links, you will see where they will come apart. Be patient and savor the moment each link separates, it is extremely satisfying. Resist the urge to snap them apart, that could crack the link.
A final note: Search online for “chain carving,” “chain whittling,” “whittling a ball in a cage,” and “Japanese pencil carvings,” and be inspired by the amazing things others have done.
